Education is one of the most fundamental social institutions for expanding knowledge, cultivating individual capabilities, and building collective capacities for development. Its role extends beyond the mere transmission of information or the preparation of the workforce; schooling can foster foundational literacy, critical thinking, civic engagement, social well-being, intergenerational mobility, and the capacity to adapt to technological and environmental changes. However, school attendance or an increase in the number of years spent in education does not, in itself, guarantee learning. The quality of instruction, equitable access, teacher competence, the relevance of the curriculum, and the integration of education with the family and the broader community determine the extent to which educational opportunities are transformed into actual capabilities. This paper aims to elucidate the mechanisms through which education influences societal development and individual knowledge levels, while also examining the barriers to and policies for strengthening these processes. This study is a document-based, analytical review that draws upon reports from UNESCO, the OECD, the World Bank, and UNICEF, as well as authoritative theoretical literature. An analytical synthesis of these sources indicates that education—by enhancing literacy and skills, boosting productivity, strengthening social participation, and facilitating social mobility—can contribute to inclusive development. Conversely, in contexts characterized by inequality, the digital divide, a decline in the quality of learning, or an excessive focus on standardized testing, education may inadvertently reproduce existing inequalities. The conclusion is that educational development leads to sustainable social development only when equitable access is combined with high-quality learning, citizenship education, teacher support, valid assessment, and collaboration among schools, families, and local institutions.
