Adolescence is one of the most sensitive stages of cognitive, emotional, and social development throughout human life, which is accompanied by tremendous biological, psychological, and interpersonal changes. Adolescent mental health is considered a priority for public health systems around the world, and research evidence shows that about 14% of adolescents worldwide suffer from psychological disorders. Among the many factors affecting adolescent mental health, parenting styles play a decisive role as one of the most important environmental and contextual components. The present study aimed to systematically review and critically analyze scientific findings on the impact of parenting styles on adolescent mental health. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Baumrind's four-factor model (including authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful styles) as well as attachment theory and emotional socialization. Findings from a review of 231 studies in the form of several meta-analyses show that authoritative parenting styles are associated with the lowest levels of internalizing (such as anxiety and depression) and externalizing (such as aggression and delinquency) symptoms in adolescents. In contrast, authoritarian and controlling psychological styles are associated with increased internalizing and externalizing symptoms with a cumulative effect size of 0.24 to 0.29. In addition, permissive parenting styles are associated with higher stress and neglectful styles with the highest levels of psychological vulnerability. Examining the moderating role of variables such as adolescent gender, age, environmental sensitivity, culture, and geographic region showed that the impact of parenting styles on mental health varies across cultural contexts, and that the role of the father in some societies, such as China, has a greater impact than that of the mother. The findings also indicate that the relationship between parenting style and mental health is explained through mediating variables such as self-compassion, self-esteem, and sensitivity to peer pressure. Based on the results of this study, designing and implementing intervention programs based on promoting authoritative parenting skills and reducing psychologically controlling behaviors can play an effective role in the primary prevention of psychological disorders in adolescents.
